"Cyclone Idai has triggered a "massive disaster" in southern Africa affecting hundreds of thousands if not millions of people, the UN says." (source BBC). The cyclone that hit last week Thursday, March 14 was a high-end Category 2 storm with 175 kph (110 mph winds) but the area had already experienced over a week of non-stop rain, and rivers were filled above normal.
Prior to the landfall, the system brought heavy rains and flooding to the three countries resulting in the displacement of thousands of people, loss of life and the destruction of property. Mozambique, Zimbabwe and Malawi are all now experiencing flooding. So far, there are 300 people confirmed dead, but the numbers are expected to rise drastically as many are still missing, and some 15,000 are still waiting to be rescued — many of them clinging to rooftops or treetops.
Please pray for the governments and other agencies who are working tirelessly to help people. Pray that the flooding will subside. And pray that rescue teams can get in to the most affected areas to help, as severely damaged infrastructure is making that a challenge.
Please give to support the OM teams in the region to respond and help bring relief to the communities in their immediate areas.
PS In the unlikely event that we raise more than is needed to support OM teams in their relief efforts, your gift will be spent on similar emergency responses and initiatives through our Mercy Fund.
