Bardsey Island

On April 5th I will be setting off on a pilgrimage to Bardsey Island, off the coast of the Lleyn peninsula in Wales. The distance of my journey is about 135 miles, and I will be taking just under a fortnight to do it, walking an average of around 10 miles each day. Various family members and friends will be coming to accompany me on different parts of the journey, and there will be some alone time, too. If the weather allows, I will cross to the island on Maundy Thursday, so that I will be able to be there for Good Friday and the Easter weekend, returning, God willing, on Easter Sunday, when my husband will pick me up and bring me home.

I was inspired to walk to Bardsey partly by seeing the island from the coast on a visit to Aberdaron; then I read the book 'Earth Pilgrim' by Satish Kumar. Satish walked with a friend from the burial place of Gandhi in India to the grave of Dr Martin Luther King in the U.S. When he told his teacher his intention, the teacher thought it was a great idea, and advised him not to take any money with him — 'That way, you will learn to trust God, other people and yourself.' While I am not going entirely without money, a theme of my walk is trusting in God, and in the kindness of strangers, and I have been contacting the clergy responsible for each church I will be stopping at to seek overnight accommodation. People have already been very kind, and I feel I have a series of new friends along the way — I am looking forward to meeting them!

Another strand of the walk is to provide for the education of children orphaned by the long-running conflict in Democratic Republic of Congo. If you feel able to sponsor Kim Fitzwarine-Smith you can visit her Just Giving page here:
